For over four tenner , adaptation of Stephen King ’s novel and unforesightful stories have made it to the big screen . Some film , likeCarrie , Pet Sematary , andSalem ’s Lot , have even been remade . But there ’s only been one adaptation to date of King ’s magnum opus , The Dark Tower . King publish the first of eight novels inThe Dark Towerseries in 1982 , and the account of the Book grew to encompass or disturb upon several other novel and tales King has publish . Over a decade ago , there was an ambitious plan to bringThe Dark Towerto film and television at the same time in gild to give it the adaption it deserved .
When that programme failed to come to fruition , aDark Towerfilm was made in 2017 by director Nikolaj Arcel from a script he co - write with Akiva Goldsman , Jeff Pinkner , and Anders Thomas Jensen . Through a crotchet of the novel that would take too much time to explicate , The Dark Towermovie is both a continuation to the books and a new starting time . In inadequate , it ’s the complete jumping - on point for the King - poetry , and we ’re sharing four reasons why you should watchThe Dark Toweron Netflix this calendar month .

Idris Elba gives a committed performance
Not every movie that Idris Elba chooses to be in life up to expectations , but have you ever seen Elba give a bad functioning ? He is an highly talented performing artist , and he dives into the master character , Roland Deschain , with every fibre of his being . rooter of the novels probably pictured someone like Clint Eastwood in the role , since the illustration of Roland on the rule book cover up resembled the Western image .
And yet Elba pulls off his take on the character by being a credible natural process torpedo , while allowing the audience to see different sides of Roland . He ’s more selfishly concerned in catch his own retaliation than living up to his creed as the last of the Gunslingers , but Roland also displays empathy for Jake Chambers ( Tom Taylor ) , a psychically gifted stripling who needs his help .
That variety does n’t go on properly away , and the reasonableness why Roland ’s transition is credible is that we see his emotions and his heart on Elba ’s face . To paraphrase the Gunslinger ’s gospel , Roland has not blank out the face of his father , and neither has Elba .
Matthew McConaughey is deviously evil as the villain
During his calling , Matthew McConaughey has largely spiel heroic characters or rom - com star man . ButThe Dark Towergave the doer a chance to embody one of the most substantial villains in King ’s taradiddle : Walter Padick . Readers ofThe Stand — or viewer who figure either ofThe Stand‘s video adaptations — know Walter by a different name : Randall Flagg . Walter is n’t the fiend , but he may be the closest thing to that fiend . He ’s a sorcerer who delights in hurting mass by reach them destroy themselves . And Walter wants to stretch out his powerfulness across the multiverse .
There are several instances in the film where Walter is fell just because he can be . McConaughey seemed to really revel playing such a radically unlike character , and Walter appear to enjoy the chaos and pain that he allow for in his wake . He ’s a worthy adversary to Elba ’s Roland , and his presence haunt the film whenever he appear .
The film blends several genres
Much likeThe Dark Towernovels , this movie has its foot in several different music genre . Roland is like a material body out of a Western , while the construct of the Dark Tower itself take like fantasy . Because the motion-picture show goes through the trouble of explain what the Dark Tower is and what its purpose is , we wo n’t reiterate that here except to say that Walter wants to bring it down to check his net rise to king .
No King story would be complete without factor of horror , and that ’s where Walter ’s minions get along in . We rarely see what they truly front like in the picture show . Instead , there are but unsettling glimpses of their badly - meet human skin that barely hides the freak beneath the surface . ultimately , there ’s the sci - fi element that allows Roland and Jake to intersect between humankind . Unfortunately , they do n’t have many destination to explore in the movie . But the ability to travel through multiple worlds play a expectant part in the books .
It steps into the King-verse
Sony Pictures may not have had the right to all of King ’s novel when making this film , but that did n’t stopThe Dark Towerfrom dropping a few Easter egg that cite his books and other movies . The most notable example is Jake ’s great power , which is referred to as his Shine . That ’s fromThe ShiningandDoctor Sleep . And as previously noted above , Walter was also the main scoundrel inThe Stand .
Some of the references may be lost on the watcher if they are n’t die - hard readers of King ’s Holy Writ . Regardless , these connections to King ’s other works makeThe Dark Towerfeel more epical in scope . Prime Video was working on a new Dark Tower adaptation within the last few years , but that seems to be years away at the early since showrunner Mike Flanagan recently signed on to direct the nextExorcistmovie . In the meantime , The Dark Towermovie is all we have to savour from King ’s greatest achievement to date .
